Niche decorating

Okay, here's the blank slate. (The bookshelf has been relocated upstairs, to make room for a canvas photo gallery wall...)
Dan decided, one Saturday morning, to go to Hobby Lobby and "get these niches decorated!"

I said sure. Go ahead! It's not as easy as you think! Good luck! (as I snickered under my breath...)

30 minutes later....THIRTY. Not THREE hours, but 30 minutes....he comes back, runs around the house for a few things and does this:

 What?! How'd he do that?!
So much better, but it still seems off.
For one, we have two completely different color schemes going on.

On the right, we have the beautiful red/maroon family. I like this color, but not sure I want so much of it. I also like the idea of the lamp, but not this lamp in particular.

Now this picture, I LOVE. I love the shape and size. I think it's perfect. I love the colors of blue and green, as it compliments what we have going on in the front room and the kitchen.
(the shoe box is just to show you how it would look hanging up...without putting holes in the wall, just in case this is not the final solution.

So, LONG story short, I went back to the store and got it's matching picture.
But, is it too much matchy matchy?
What else could I do?
Is it both pictures or neither picture?
What if I did two floating shelves, not, staggered, with items on it, to create a square feel?

Also, any furniture ideas would be appreciated.
I like the idea of two of these swivel chairs, that could be spun around when watching TV or playing the wii, or back towards the couch for company.

Thanks for your feedback!

  1. We already talked on the phone . . but here are a few more thoughts . . .
I love the swivel chair idea!
Also, that other niche . . . in addition to the picture you oculd put in some of those light house type things that you posted earlier (a few posts down) with a blue or green candle in it. I think I saw some of these for a low price at ikea. maybe. LOVE how cleared out the room feels without the book case. You are inspiring!

  2. swivel chair sounds awesome. do they come in a coordinating color of your couch though?

I really like the flower pic. Not sure how i feel about the double flower pics. buuuut not sure how i feel about doing something totally different, either. Lantern idea sounds good.

i think the leap frog movie added a nice touch. :)

The canvas wall will be awesome.

Now you just need some coordinating colored throw pillows and blanket to lighten up the couch and add a little color!

  3. Finally commenting on this, you may have already got it perfect by now so ignore this if you do. I think the matching pictures are fine, but I don't like one being higher than the other. Pairs in rooms add balance, but not having them on the same level creates that feeling of "off". Ether you want something clearly different or clearly the same, no in between. So matching is fine, but make it perfectly matching by having the pictures at the same hight. If you decide it is too matching for you I think it would look good to put the red matted frame back up, but move one or both of the other red objects to the other side with the flower picture and swap them for the vase/candles on the other side. Then you would have red on both sides and it would tie them together.
