Okay, I Need some help. This room has got me. I want to decorate other areas in our home that I have inspiration for, but Dan wants this one done first, because it is the first thing people see.
I've labeled the pictures for reference purposes, so I'm not reposting pictures and making this LONGER than it is.
Picture A:
(The view from the front door)
How about a LARGE clock that centers in the peak of the vaulted ceiling?
Picture B:
(Looking in from the Kitchen)
Picture C:
(The front door, from the corner by the piano) Notice the vaulted ceiling, and the bajilion angles. WHERE to paint?! I thought about a smaller console table behind the front door, or a half circle one, with a large mirror above it? Or just a large vase/plant in the corner by the closet?
Picture D:
Picture E:
Picture F:
Any thoughts on what to put above the piano? I don't like the smaller pictures. I was thinking a large clock or a LARGE family picture with wall scones on either side?
Or, I could hang this clock on the outside of the wall, that goes too the kitchen. so you can see it from the kitchen AND the living room.
(Okay, I couldn't get it to load, but it's one of those double sided trains-station like clocks. )
Would you paint this wall? Leave the trim part on top a cream, so it looks like trim? or leave it alone.
Some things to keep in mind:
1) ONLY the piano MUST stay.
2) The couch was given to us. We love it because it is super comfy, so probably won't replace it in the next year, but it is not a permanent fixture.
3) I need something to store my music, and piano teaching stuff.
4) What walls do I paint?
This is a console table found at Walmart. I like the tall doors, for a place to stash music, and the drawers for my little things: flashcards, metronome, stickers, etc.
Another option:
This is the round table in the corner by the couch, as seen in PICTURE B. The table would go under neath the window where the two lone chairs are currently.
So, I was thinking of scooting the piano towards the tile area, and opening up the corner and putting something like this in the corner:
(I like the rug also, but might be too bland?)
For painting I like this idea:
I like the color also. I noticed how well it went with the oak mantel. I would put this on the wall that continues on into the kitchen.
Some "inspiration pieces" I like:
I would like a coffee table, but Dan thinks it will make the room feel to crowded. Opinions?!
OKay, that's all for now. ANY imput would be awesome...via comments or e-mail?
i will come back to this, but- first thought- i'm a big fan of the console table under the window. i actually really like the walmart one.
ReplyDeletebig fan of that idea..
okay- a few more thoughts. I like the idea of a Large fam pic above the piano. I feel like a clock there is subconsciously sending the message of "how much longer do I have to sit here??/practice/ etc." or maybe that's just me...:P
ReplyDeleteClock centered on the side wall vaulted ceiling. Not sure how that would look since the window is off center.
Not a fan of the beige on beige rug over beige carpet.
CURTAINS. CURTAINS WILL MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.
right now Im fairly opposed to painting the 'dividing' wall- esp. a dark or largely contrasting color. I think doing so will make it really stick out as a 'room divider'- if you really wanted to do something to that wall, i would make it very subtle. (maybe stuble stripes could be cool?)
hm. I keep trying to see if there is a way to add 2 more seats to this room, kinda facing the couch. Then you could actually seat guests in there (VTers/HTers, ppl just stopping by that your not really going to bring all the way into your house)- That was our problem with the front room and just one couch. Couldn't really do anything there.
Okay. the more i look at this the more im dying for you to get curtains. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteAnd then make some little throw pillows.
And I am liking the idea of the soft leather chair in the corner. In my brain I can see one of your kids (chels?) curling up there with a book to read while mommy practices beautiful music. sighhh.
I'll come back to this soon!
ReplyDeleteWant to be able to give it some time . . .
I love the color of the walls in the picture. I think you could totally pull it off. You would need to paint from the corner to the right of the piano all the way around the room to the left corner of your coat closet. As far as the angles by your entry-way, I would paint all the way up to the ceiling, but not the ceiling. You might have to rent a ladder to get up there to tape and roll the paint, but I think it would work. We have some slanted ceilings in the bedrooms in our old house and the room looked pulled together after we painted those. I found this website that might be helpful:

It talks about how to paint and arrange furniture in rooms with weird angles.
I agree with Tawna about the clock above the window. With the window being off-center I think your best bet is some nice curtains and nothing above the window so you don't make that stand out.
I really like the idea of a half-moon table and mirror by the front door. I actually have one that I love and it came from Wal-Mart online. If you really want to incorporate the clock, you could hang it above the little table instead of a mirror.
I love the idea of the console table and might opt for the first one....less likely for little hands to pull baskets and books off the shelves? Another fun idea would be to find two lamps that could side on either end of the table. Another thing that I have learned from watching HGTV is lighting also makes the room!
I also agree with too much beige. A thought would be to add a punch of color with a large area rug. If the walls are going to be a darker taupe, you could use a rug with some medium greens and darker reds...still in the earth-tone pallet, but a little bolder.
It might also be fun to create a display on top of your half-wall between the living room and kitchen. I've seen arrangements of baskets and flowers or large platters with designs on them that could bring the two rooms together. Something else to think about, but that may not be what you want.
I hope this is helpful! I wish I were there to see it in person! Another thing I would say is don't be afraid to try things! If you see something you like, buy it a bring it home! Just make note of the return policy, but most places have a least 30 days. Hang it up or lay it out for a week and see how you like it throughout the day. Sometimes things and colors look different as the light changes in your house.
Good luck!
